CARE Closet, $61,000 Student Scholarship & Chino Day at the Fair

The Chino Rotary Club did a lot of good in September. We worked the CARE Closet, attended Chino Day at the Fair and secured a Global Grant for our sponsored student, Anna Casalme to attend the University at Edinburgh in Childhood Studies for $61,000.

We started the month visiting the CARE Closet, a program run by the City of Chino and the Chino Valley Unified School District. Through the program we helped prepare clothes and supplies for homeless and needy families in the Chino Valley.

The video we shared on Facebook and YouTube received thousands of views and had dozens of people ask for the address so they could donate clothing and supplies to the CARE Closet. Thank you to Arianna for arranging the opportunity to work with the CARE Closet.

Thanks to Chris Foster, Gene Hernandez and Melinda Robbins for helping secure a Global Grant for Anna Casalme. Anna reached out to us back in February asking if we would sponsor her to be a global grant recipient. Our club agreed to offer her a scholarship of $1,050 and she was nominated to receive a Global Grant from Rotary International which she received!

Anna, a Chino Hills resident, is now attending a Masters Program in Childhood Studies at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. A great job by Chino Rotarians, our Rotary District 5300 and Rotary International for helping Anna get a Global Grant.

Journalism, United Way and $14,400 Distributed at the Chino Rotary Club

The owner of Welborn Social Media and the founder of The Tutoring Solution. My goal is to help business owners share the passion they have for their business with as many potential customers as possible.By helping passionate people achieve their dreams I am helping to create a society of passionate leaders that will help inspire others to make their dreams a reality.

August was another busy month for the Chino Rotary Club as we worked with the Inland Empire United Way and distributed $14,400 in checks to worthy charities. Melinda Robbins spoke about human trafficking and the Rotary International Convention. And Larry Welborn spoke about Why Journalism is Important.

On August 2, Larry Welborn, my father and hero, a retired journalist for the Orange County Register came to speak to the Chino Rotary Club about Why Journalism is Important.

Larry Welborn Speaking at the Chino Rotary Club about Why Journalism is Important

Larry Welborn Speaking at the Chino Rotary Club

My Dad discussed the main four reasons journalism is important. Those reasons are:

  • to stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves
  • to bring out the truth
  • to make your readers care
  • to make a difference

On August 16, the Chino Rotary Club visited the Inland Empire United Way to take a tour of their facilities. The United Way does a lot for our local community including manning the 211 call center and collecting food and clothing for needy families.

Several Rotarians stuck around to write cards for terminally ill children to help brighten their day.

We shot this video to document our visit: Chino Rotary Club Visits the Inland Empire United Way.

On August 23, Melinda Robbins shared her experience at the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, GA where they focused on one of the biggest issues facing our world today, human trafficking.

And on August 30, we distributed $14,400 to five different local charities: Boys Republic, the Chino Rotary Club, Love Them All Foundation, Priceless Pet Rescue and The Let It Be Foundation.

Make a Difference with the Chino Rotary Club

The owner of Welborn Social Media and the founder of The Tutoring Solution. My goal is to help business owners share the passion they have for their business with as many potential customers as possible.By helping passionate people achieve their dreams I am helping to create a society of passionate leaders that will help inspire others to make their dreams a reality.

Making a Difference with the Chino Rotary Club

This year our Rotary Theme is Making a Difference.

When I first got started in business about six years ago, I attended a Millionaire Mind Seminar in Phoenix with my sister and business partner Lacey. During these seminars they do a bunch of rah-rah stuff to help get you out of your comfort zone and one of the assignments they gave us was to write a song that embodied who we are.

I remember my song went something like this: “I want to make a difference. I want to make the world a better place. I want to make a difference…” And after I did my little performance to my small group including my sister I remember her saying something like, “Ahh, I get it now.” In that moment, I felt she understood me. So, for me, it’s fitting that this year’s theme is Making a Difference because it defines who I am and the impact I want to have on our community.

Installation of Zeb Welborn as Chino Rotary Club President for 2017/2018

As I was preparing for this year I invited a guest to every Rotary meeting I attended and with every guest and every member here, I asked the same four questions.

  • What do you like about the Chino Rotary Club?
  • What don’t you like about the Chino Rotary Club?
  • How can the Chino Rotary Club help you?
  • How can you help the Chino Rotary Club?

Why Become a Rotarian?

Today, I want to ask you one question – Why?

  • If you are a current Chino Rotary member tell me why you are a Rotarian in the comments below.
  • If you ever thought about becoming a Rotarian, tell me why you would consider becoming a Rotarian in the comments below.

As you’re thinking about it, I want to tell you why I joined the Chino Rotary Club.

There are multiple reasons I became a Rotarian. The biggest reason was being asked repeatedly by Dale Bright, owner of Dale Bright’s Auto to join. But, internally, I signed up because I knew I could better serve my community with others than I could alone.

I wanted to give back, but more importantly, I wanted to experience giving back in different ways to serve my community.

And, I wanted to be moved. I wanted to participate in Rotary moments that moved me, inspired me and let me know I was making a difference.

#1 Goal for 2017/2018 is to Increase Membership

In speaking with all of our members and prospective members, I created one goal for my Rotary Presidency in 2017 and that is to more than double our membership from 17 to at least 34 members.

To do this, I’ve asked our club to focus on a few things:

  1. bring a guest to every meeting
  2. attendance matters
  3. make our Wednesday meetings more friendly
  4. do community service
  5. connect more with each other

Continue the Chino Rotary Club Legacy

The Chino Rotary Club has a rich history in serving the Chino Valley area and I want to continue those efforts, but our club has declined in membership from close to 100 members at its peak to 17 today. Our lack of membership has limited our impact on our community and has put the Chino Rotary Club in danger of failing.

An increase in membership solves current problems facing our club and gives us the opportunity to make a difference in our community.

Entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk recently said, “Money doesn’t mean anything to me. I want legacy, influence, and impact.”

This statement embodies my personal philosophy on life and why I wanted to become the Chino Rotary President for 2017/2018.

I want to make a difference. I hope you do too.

Will you join me?

“Chino Rotary Club Celebrates 92 Years of Service with Dinner/Auction Fundraiser”

Chino Rotary Dinner & Auction

Since February 1925, Rotary has been saving lives both close to home and around the world by tapping into a global network of service clubs dedicated to raise funds and awareness for challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, polio eradication, clean water and sanitation, and malnutrition just to name a few. The Chino Rotary Club is part of that global network that has united many great minds around a shared purpose: “To improve the quality of life in our community.” With a long history of involvement and financial support for local programs, the Chino Rotary Club aims at making 2017 a year to expand their support of community and international projects by hosting an array of fundraisers during the year that will help the club do what it does best, give!

“This year our goal is to raise $30,000 for Youth Leadership Camps, Entrepreneurial Training, Music, Essay and Speech Competitions for our local high school students, food, clothing and childcare for Chino Valley residents in need, basic commodities to support our active military troops, and new to our list of philanthropy endeavors is to support those who have been victims of human trafficking,” said Melinda Robbins, MBA President of the Chino Rotary Club. “We will meet this aggressive goal by starting our fundraising efforts with our 2017 Annual Dinner & Auction,” she concluded.

The Dinner and Auction’s theme is “The Heart of Chino – A Legacy of Service” which truly denotes the local club’s mission to give and serve. This event will be held on Thursday February 23, 2017 at the Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills from 6-9pm. Tickets for this event cost $35 per person and can be purchased online through Eventbrite.com under Dinner/Auction Fundraiser or purchased at the Chino Champion Office located at 13179 9th Street in Chino. Everyone is welcomed to attend this fun-filled Dinner and Auction Fundraiser.

The Chino Rotary Club is also seeking event sponsors and accepting items for the Silent and Live Auctions. “We seek the help of community sponsors to partner with our Club at various monetary levels to help us make a significant and sustainable difference in our community and together leave a lasting impact,” said Zeb Welborn President-elect of the Chino Rotary Club.

For more information about being an event sponsor or providing items for the auction, please call Melinda Robbins at 909-491-4791 or Zeb Welborn at 909-973-9089.

Let Zeb know if you plan on attending, send an email to Zeb@WelbornMedia.com.

Do You Have an Entrepreneurial Mindset or an Employee Mindset?

The owner of Welborn Social Media and the founder of The Tutoring Solution. My goal is to help business owners share the passion they have for their business with as many potential customers as possible.By helping passionate people achieve their dreams I am helping to create a society of passionate leaders that will help inspire others to make their dreams a reality.

Charlotte Clary and Beverly Vines-Haines were two grandmas who started close to thirty different businesses which all ended up failing . .  until they hit it big with Ice Chips Candy.  The world was introduced to Charlotte and Beverly when they were featured as the entrepreneurs who invented Ice Chips Candy on ABC’s hit TV show, Shark Tank.

Beverly Vines-Haines, Charlotte Clary and Ice Chips Candy. An Entrepreneurial Mindset.

Beverly Vines-Haines, Charlotte Clary and Ice Chips Candy

If you talk to many business owners, many of them will say, “I am unemployable.”  The reason for that is that these people who are entrepreneurial have figured out a way to make a living without becoming an employee.  They then use their time to work, and work, and work to create and test new ideas until they find the idea that will lead to their ultimate success.  Some people become successful on their first business, but most business owners who have become successful have started numerous ventures until they hit the one that makes them a success.

The Tutoring Solution | Chino Hills, Chino, Corona, Norco, Eastvale, Southern California

The Tutoring Solution

My first business is The Tutoring Solution.  We are a local tutoring company that serves Chino, Chino Hills, Corona, Eastvale and numerous other cities in Southern California.  I learned the skills I needed to create a successful business by building and growing The Tutoring Solution.  I still own The Tutoring Solution and hired my then girlfriend and now wife, Cynthia De La Torre to become the director of the business and to manage it.  The skills I learned while building the tutoring business directly led me to starting Welborn Media, devoted toward helping passionate business owners use the Internet to become more successful.  Welborn Media has even grown to expand to include 19th Hole Media and the Defining Success Podcast.  I have been bitten by the entrepreneurial bug and now I’m honing and growing my craft . . . working to make my business more successful every day.

A great example of someone who has an entrepreneurial mindset is my father-in-law who owns his own agricultural business. He grew up in Mexico and as a young boy of probably five years old, he would work to sell gum on street corners . . . his first taste of entrepreneurship.  When he came to America, he got a job at a young age in the agricultural business where he learned and cultivated his craft.  Others saw him as someone with a strong work ethic and someone who achieved results.  As a result, he was given more responsibilities and more pay until he was able to afford to purchase a piece of land where he could grow and sell ground cover at his business, DLT Growers.  His entrepreneurial mindset led him down the path towards a career in entrepreneurship and he’s constantly thinking of new ideas and new ways to grow and expand his business and even create new opportunities for others.

DLT Growers sells ground cover in Southern California

DLT Growers

Charlotte Clary and Beverly Vines-Haines are two of my favorite entrepreneurs.  For those of you that are unfamiliar with Ice Chips Candy, they are natural mints which are broken up into uneven pieces.  The way they explained it on Shark Tank, they painted the picture that they created this product in their garage and were breaking up these pieces by hand with a hammer in their home.  It’s a visual which always reminds me that becoming successful takes hard work, discipline and a willingness to get your hands dirty.  Charlotte and Beverly are a great example of entrepreneurs who fought and fought and fought until they hit it big.

There is a big difference between entrepreneurs and employees . . . the most important being in their mindset.

An entrepreneurial mindset is being someone who is constantly willing to make mistakes, learn from them and grow as a result. They are continually leaving their comfort zone, and experimenting with trial and error.  Most employees, I’ve found, are in the mindset of avoiding mistakes.  Employees who make mistakes are typically reprimanded for doing so and thus they lose some of their creativity in the process.  An entrepreneur is constantly making mistakes, failing at things and learning from them.

Welborn Media and the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce Website

At the beginning of 2012 Welborn Media joined the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce. So far we’ve attended numerous events, given a handful of helpful presentations, met so many hardworking business leaders, and Zeb has become an Ambassador for the Chamber. Recently we were brought on to redesign the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce website.

About the Chamber:

“The Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce continues to be the largest and most comprehensive business organization in the Chino Valley speaking on behalf of its member firms. Members include a mix of companies of all sizes and industries, from entrepreneurial start-up companies to large long-established business entities. The Chino Valley is indeed “Open” to business and the Chamber works to make this community a premiere place to do business.”

We were excited to get the opportunity to create a website that would be able to benefit so many people in our own community, whether it be business owners who would like an online presence, or residents looking to find out more about businesses and events in the community.

The old Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce website was difficult to update and difficult to navigate. We wanted to make sure we gave our chamber something much more useful, for chamber members and visitors to the website alike. We decided to use WordPress as a content management system in tandem with ChamberMaster, a powerful easy-to-use member management software created specifically for chambers of commerce. By keeping the design clean and modern we were able to create a site that is easy to navigate while still representing the Chino Valley. Here are some screenshots of our chamber of commerce website design:
